Vision 2026 rehabilitated 160 riot-hit families in North East Delhi

New Delhi (28/08/2020)

The tragic Delhi riots in February 2020 left nothing but despair and distress for hundreds of families living in north east part of the capital city. Those disastrous incidents were only bloodsheds, property destruction, burglary and extreme violence which claimed life of 53 persons. Houses were set aflame, shops were burnt, belongings were looted, vehicles were blown up, schools were torched, and mosques were damaged.

Right after the riots, government agencies and various social organizations came forward to support the affected families. Partner organizations under Vision 2026 like Society for Bright Future (SBF), Human Welfare Foundation (HWF), Human Welfare Trust (HWT), Medical Service Society (MSS) and The Women Education Empowerment Trust (TWEET) also immediately responded to the situation by facilitating to set up a relief camp, distributing thousands of ration kits, and organizing medical camps.

Now, Vision is leading the way among the non-governmental organizations coming up with a proper rehabilitation project intended at rebuilding lives and livelihoods that were spoiled by the rioters. So far, 160+ families have been rehabilitated in the first phase of the project. Houses are being reconstructed for the families whose houses were torched, commercial shops are being renovated for those whose shops were fired and looted, livelihood means are given to the families whose means were robbed or blown up, and financial and educational supports are provided to orphans and widows whose guardians were killed.

The rehabilitation project includes 70 livelihood projects, renovation and opening of   15 commercial establishments, reconstruction of 44 burnt houses, support for 33 orphans and 12 widows, and scholarship for 15 needy students. Under the livelihood projects, bikes, cycles with stock for sale, e-rickshaws, sewing machines, vegetable carts, and stocks for shops have been given to victimized families. Al Shifa Hospital under Vision is continuing free follow-up treatment of 9 seriously injured victims.

Since Vision is planning to extend the rehabilitation projects to all victims, more projects are in the pipeline of the next phase.
